Golf Course Etiquette: 10 Rules You Need to Know Before Your First Game
Golf is a unique sport where everyone – from professionals to absolute beginners – becomes one big team. Although each of us is striving for our own score, we are truly playing for the same goal. We use the same holes, walk on the same grass, and contend with the same conditions.
On the course, everyone has their own "peak to conquer." For one, it might be the lowest round of their life, for another, a coveted first birdie, and for someone else, simply a round with friends for pure enjoyment. Each of these goals is equally important. That's why etiquette is crucial – it allows all of us to enjoy the game without frustration. Learn the rules that will make the day easier for you and others!
1. "FORE!" – Safety is Fundamental
This is absolute number one. The health of players is more important than any score.
-
React loudly: If your shot is heading towards other people, shout "FORE!" at the top of your lungs. This is a signal for others to protect their heads. Don't be ashamed – on the course, it's an expression of the highest responsibility! It's better to shout FORE! than to regret it later.
2. Take Care of the Course as Your Own
Imagine you own this course. How would you want others to treat it? Leave it in the condition you would want to find it.
-
Fix your marks: If you took a divot, put it back and tap it down. If your ball made a pitch mark on the green, repair it with a pitchfork; you can find them here!
This way, the player behind you will have the same chance for a good putt as you.
3. Pace of Play: Don't Be Afraid to Let Others Through!
Respect that someone might play faster. Look behind you from time to time. If you see that the group behind you is waiting, and you have a worse hole or are playing with more players, it is your duty to let faster players through!
-
Wave them through: Step aside and let them pass. You'll stop feeling pressure, and they'll thank you for the smooth play. Who knows, maybe next time you'll arrange a joint round of golf?
4. Honesty – By Cheating, You Only Cheat Yourself
In golf, you are your own judge. Let's say you missed a 30 cm putt, your friends didn't see it, and you recorded the score as if the ball went in.
-
The taste of victory: You might finish the round with a personal best, but you'll know that the score is false. The joy of the game disappears when you know you've cheated yourself. Be fair – that gives the greatest satisfaction.
5. Ready Golf: Respect vs. Time
Traditionally, the person with the best score on the previous hole (the "honor") hits first. It's a nice gesture, but... we don't want to be on the course for 6 hours!
-
Play when ready: We recommend "Ready Golf." If your friend made a birdie, you can let him play first out of respect, but you can also ask: "May I play first?" Most players will appreciate you looking out for everyone's time.
6. Cart Always "Towards the Next Tee"
When you approach the green, leave your cart or bag on the path leading to the next tee (the start of the next hole).
-
Save time: This way, after finishing the hole, you don't have to go back for your equipment, wasting the time of the group behind you. You simply pick up your bag on the way to the next tee!
7. Sand Bunkers: Erase Your Traces
Smoothing out marks in a bunker can save another person's round!
-
Caddie's secret: The best caddies always rake bunkers towards the hole. Why? Because then there's the greatest chance that another golfer's ball will lie best. Make sure the sand is perfectly even after your shot.
8. The Green is "Holy Ground"
This is where the fate of the most important shots is decided. Never stand on the line between your partner's ball and the hole.
-
Fix errors: If you happen to scuff the grass with your shoe and leave a mark – fix it! If you don't have a pitchfork with you, you can use a regular tee to repair a pitch mark.
9. Attire: Comfort and Class
Attire is important, but there's nothing to be afraid of! Just remember the golden rule: avoid jeans and always wear a collared shirt.
-
Shoes are essential: Specialized golf shoes are recommended, especially in the morning when there's dew on the grass, or when it's rainy. They will provide you with stability and dry feet. You can find ideal clothing and footwear, of course, in the clothing section on our Epic Golf website!
10. Digital Detox: Silence Your Phone!
This is super important – the course is a place for relaxation. Turn off the sound on your phone. If you have to answer, do it discreetly. Focusing on nature and company is the best part of this game.
