Once you feel that golf is for you, you face a dilemma: how to choose your first set of golf clubs? You can have a maximum of 14 clubs, but believe me, you don't need an army of equipment to start. Choosing the right golf set for beginners is crucial, as well-matched clubs can accelerate your progress and help your game.

We've prepared a practical guide to help you make the best decision – without overpaying and without unnecessary complications.

1. Ready-made set versus custom-built clubs

This is a fundamental decision. For 90% of beginners, the best and most cost-effective solution is to purchase a ready-made set of golf clubs.

Ready-made Set (Half Set or Full Set)

  • What it is: Sets are often labeled as a "half set". They include the basic, most needed clubs (usually 6-10 pieces) and a bag. You can see examples of sets here.

  • Advantages: They are forgiving (easier to hit the ball with), significantly cheaper, and do not require in-depth technical knowledge. This is an ideal golf club set for beginners.

  • Disadvantages: The clubs are less precisely tailored to your unique parameters, such as height, arm length, or individual swing parameters.

Building Your Own Set

  • For whom: For players who have already obtained their green card, have several months of training behind them, and know exactly what clubs they need, e.g., due to unusual height or are willing to use a professional fitting service. You can learn more about fitting here.

  • Disadvantages: This is a more costly solution.

2. What must your first set of clubs include?

You don't need all 14 clubs. Focusing on key shots will accelerate your learning. A basic set should include:

Club Function Why is it needed? Tips for beginners
Putter Rolling the ball into the hole on the Green. Accounts for almost half of the strokes in the game! Choose a model with a stable, large head.
Irons Shots on the Fairway and approach shots. The foundation of every round. Models 6, 7, 8, 9. Look for super game improvement type clubs (with a large cavity in the head) that are forgiving.
Wedge Short shots to the Green and getting out of a Bunker. Key for the short game. Pitching Wedge (PW), and possibly add a Sand Wedge (SW) with a higher loft
Wood/Hybrid Longest shots from the Tee or Fairway. Replaces difficult long Irons (3, 4, 5). A Hybrid (e.g., 4H) is much easier to use than a Wood or Driver.

3. Technical parameters: the key to comfort

Even the best golf set won't help if it's poorly suited to your body. Here are the two most important parameters:

A. Shaft Stiffness (Flex)

The shaft is the handle of the club. Its stiffness (flex) must be matched to your swing speed.

  • For beginners: Regular (R) is usually best. For women, seniors, or those with less physical strength – Lady (L) or Senior (A/M).

  • Why it's important: The wrong flex leads to a loss of distance and lack of control over the ball's flight direction.

B. Shaft Material: Graphite vs. Steel

  • Graphite: Lighter and generates greater speed, which translates to greater distance. Excellent for beginners, women, and those with slower swings.

  • Steel: Heavier, provides more control, and is chosen by advanced players.

Our advice: As a beginner, choose golf clubs with a graphite shaft – they are more forgiving and help achieve distance, and they absorb vibrations better during impact, reducing the risk of injury.

C. Club Length

Standard clubs fit most people of average height. However, if you have an unusual body build (you are very tall or short), consider consulting a salesperson or coach to purchase clubs with an extended or shortened shaft. If you need to lengthen or shorten a club, we recommend contacting the golf club service available at Epic Golf.

4. Budget and where to buy

How much does the first set of golf clubs cost? Prices for good, brand-name sets for beginners typically range from 1500 PLN to 3500 PLN.

  1. Brick-and-mortar Golf Stores: The best option. They provide professional advice and the opportunity to try out clubs.

  2. Used Equipment: You can save money, but make sure the technical condition, especially the grooves on the club heads, is good. You can look for used clubs on the Facebook group - Giełda Sprzętu Golfowego, where several thousand Polish golfers buy and sell used golf equipment.

Remember: Don't invest in expensive, advanced equipment until you gain experience and get to know your playing style. Your first clubs are meant to help you learn, not demand the precision of a professional!
